Tetiaroa is an atoll first and a resort second, and The Brando says so plainly. The Tetiaroa Society, a non-profit that grew from Marlon Brando's wish to preserve sanctuaries for future generations, runs an Ecostation where scientists study sustainable practices. The 35 private villas and a residence are set back from the beach on Onetahi motu, built into rather than on top of the ecosystem. A seawater air-conditioning system cools the villas, and organic gardens supply the restaurants. Varua Te Ora Polynesian Spa is reached by walkways through the undergrowth, and Fare Manu, the bird house, is a lofty spa suite within it. During turtle season, guests can join night observations with the Te mana o te moana biologists.
