Why it's holistic

  • Canyon Ranch describes itself as a first-of-its-kind wellness resort that pioneered an integrative approach, drawing holistic methods, treatments and evidence from both western and eastern traditions to address mind, body and spirit.
  • It says approaches popularised there, including yoga, meditation, plant-based diets and integrative medicine, have since gone mainstream.
  • The story starts with founder Mel Zuckerman deciding in 1978 to change a sedentary lifestyle and wanting to help others do the same.
  • In Tucson the resort says every aspect of well-being, from movement to mindfulness, is nurtured in one place, immersed in the Sonoran Desert.

About

Physicians, registered dietitians, exercise physiologists and licensed therapists make up the team at Canyon Ranch Tucson, the resort Mel and Enid Zuckerman opened in 1979. It stands at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains in the Sonoran Desert, next to Sabino Canyon; the name comes from that canyon and the Double U Dude Ranch the Zuckermans bought. Stays are all-inclusive, and the spa offers whirlpools, cold plunges and more than 200 services. Canyon Ranch Tucson is the flagship of a brand that also operates in Lenox, Massachusetts, and Woodside, California, and the Michelin Guide has awarded it Three Keys. The resort describes its approach as integrative, drawing on western and eastern methods.
